Emergency measures for gas and electricity supplies

Emergency measures have been agreed by the government and energy suppliers to protect domestic energy supply during the disruption caused by COVID-19.

1. Prepayment Meters Customers who may not be able to add credit can contact to their supplier about options to keep them supplied.

This could include

A. Customer can nominate a third party for credit top ups (relative, friend, neighbour)

B. Energy suppliers, at their discretion, can add credit, or send a pre-loaded top up card to the customer

2. Any energy customer in financial distress will be supported by their supplier to include:

  • Debt repayments and bill payments being reassessed, reduced or paused where necessary
  • All disconnections will be completely suspended.

Ofgem have recommended that consumers leave the meter box unlocked if they need someone else to top up the meter. Smart meter customers should be able to top-up remotely, such as by phone, mobile application or online.
